The cradle of mankind is in Africa. And it is from there that Walter Knoll drew inspiration for his carpet collection "Legends of Carpets".
ANCIENT BEAUTY
The last rays of the setting sun clothe the savannah in gold. Zebras grazing in the hollows. The play of changing lights and endless expanse. Cities buzzing with life: the air filled with scents and the bright colors of the spice market. Thoughtful color transitions on the hand-plastered walls in the alleys. Dust and scorching heat, shimmering mirages and breathtaking orchid gardens.
Designed in collaboration with fabric designer Helmut Scheufele, Walter Knoll rugs are inspired by the landscapes and colors of Africa. The collection draws strength from the continent's creativity, which materializes in timeless, woven works of art. In some models, intense reds and blues resemble reflections in the sky at sunrise; in others, the dark natural hues seem to bring out the rare beauty of the desert rock layers. THE CREATIVE PROCESS
It all started with an inspirational journey. Markus Benz traveled to Marrakesh with artist and textile designer Helmut Scheufele, marking the launch of Walter Knoll's Legends of Carpets collection. The impressions of the people, the landscapes and the light that break in the markets of the medina remain in the heart. This was followed by a very different, but equally colorful trip to Namibia and Botswana. And the guiding motif of the carpet collection was clear: African landscapes and colors.
Based on impressions and travelogues, Helmut Scheufele began working in his studio, and the work began with painting. Painting abstract images from their shared impressions that were finally translated into carpet designs. Patterns were outlined, yarns were selected, and colors were developed. Carpet by carpet, detail by detail.

COLLECTION
Described by the brand as “images of naturalness and elegance,” the collection features 31 unique artworks based on impressions of natural landscapes, including savannahs and sunsets. The rugs are made from a combination of wool, silk and nettle yarn and feature color accents ranging from sun and sky to flower and sandstorm. They are handcrafted using Tibetan knotting techniques in Walter Knoll's partner workshops in Nepal, meaning that each rug is unique.
