SENSE OF NOVEMBER BY DĀVIS ŠTRAMS
My feeling this month is that transformation can be both beautiful and inevitable. Autumn is a season characterised by natural change, its deeper meaning often associated with transition, reflection and the beauty found in change.
What is the first component you think about when you start working on a new object?
Any design project starts with a study of the user and the context, it is essential to define the parameters that will allow the creation of solutions that are appropriate and tailored to the end user and unique to the context.
What do you think is the main architectural challenge?
For the last 100 years, architecture has been involved in a foolish tension between form and function; while high modernism has privileged function over form, some of today's best designers argue that architecture is about aesthetics and not much else. Architecture, in my view, is both function and form. I believe that architecture can do things. It is not just a representational art form. We are talking about performance. Aesthetics is part of performance, as is function.
I think the struggle between form and function is superficial and counterproductive. By emphasising performance instead - a hybrid of form and function, tailored to the wishes of each client and the constraints of each project - we will free architecture from the tired debate about whether it is an art or a tool. Just as art works, so do tools.
What are the other areas you draw inspiration from?
The ideology and approach of our studio is based on interdisciplinary design, so I often find myself drawing inspiration from fashion, music, art, graphic and industrial design.
How does architecture and design contribute to change in the environment and society?
I think design defines human and life progress. My work is based on the premise that good design creates positive outcomes for people
